I have always appreciated the tranquillity of Afternoon Tea since my mother booked it as a birthday treat once. I am a traditionalist in many ways, including my love of cream cheese sandwiches with cucumber or smoked salmon and an English breakfast (I mean – tea, of course!). Over the years, however, the concept of Afternoon Tea has changed quite considerably, such that it has become more modern and retro.
As part of Afternoon Tea Week (12th-18th August 2019), I visited K West Hotel to experience their Retro Afternoon Tea, which was ‘delightfully delicious.’ I could not resist the invite and what better way to celebrate a real British tradition than at a reputable boutique hotel in the heart of London. My initial impression was one of intrigue due to the retro as opposed to the traditional concept of Afternoon Tea created by the team at K West.
‘Why play things safe?’ I asked myself. Those who think outside the box often surprise themselves (for the better). Upon arrival, the waiter welcomed us with a glass of prosecco, after which he carefully explained the menu and asked if either myself or my guest had any allergies. The hospitality at K West is excellent and very professional. I read the reviews beforehand (as I do!) thus, there were no unpleasant surprises (thumbs up to a great start!)
Studio Kitchen re-created the zeitgeist of the Retro era with old props such as a classic style turntable-menu, colourful cups, and saucers in addition to a selection of takeaway Pick ‘n’ Mix sweets. Without further ado, our waiter spun the decks with:
The white tea was an additional treat—infused with flavours of Jasmine, lavender, and mullein flowers with lemongrass and ginger. Small eats can be surprisingly filling. I felt quite full after I had eaten the Halloumi Sliders. I could have eaten another (at a push) as they were scrumptious—my favourite item on the menu. However, the voice of reason (the waiter) reminded me of dessert by explaining the upcoming selection. We thought berry trifle with vanilla cream, custard & berry compote, and marzipan & plum bonbon coated with dark chocolate were sufficient.
However, this happened – more delicious delights in the form of classic scones (served with clotted cream and strawberry jam). At this point, I had more than enough to sate my initial hunger.
Overall, the food tasted fresh. Furthermore, I appreciated the combination of hot and cold food. The menu of traditional afternoon tea includes a selection of cold sandwiches, typically. On the contrary, K West Hotel & Spa offers an innovative, sustainable menu in an environment synonymous with retro style.
